Lakers Open Up Season Swinging Sticks, Then Go Cold

The Garrett College Lakers opened up there season in Myrtle Beach, SC scoring eighteen runs, and banging out sixteen hits, in an 18-7 win against Suffolk County. The Lakers got three 2-run homers from Zarek Simkovich, Bryant Scheuch and Zach Uhazie. Scheuch finished with three hits on the day, as well as Derek Gaisbauer, who also drove in two runs. Cody Hammond had two hits, including a bases clearing double. Will Rodriguez picked up his first career win, throwing four innings, giving up one earned run, and striking out six. Besides his strikeouts, all other outs Rodriguez recorded were ground ball outs.

The rest of the Lakers trip did not go as well. They lost the next three games losing to Coastal Carolina 3-2, Penn St. Dubois 12-7 and Olney Central 7-5.

"We didn't play horrible overall, but we need to play consistent to win games", says 14th year Head Coach Eric Hallenbeck. "We got strong pitching performances in three of the four games from Willie, Ramon and Uhazie. Against Penn St. we walked eight batters, and committed four errors, so we really were never in that game. Coastal we didn't hit but had a chance in the 6th inning already having two runs ,in we had bases loaded, one out, and got a ground out to the plate and a pop up. Against Olney Central it was 5-4 in the sixth and with two outs we threw a wild pitch and then they got a 2-run single to put them up 7-4. Olney is a very good ball club. They were 41-16 last year, 13-2 this year and prior to playing us had ten-run ruled everyone they played in Myrtle Beach. I guess people would call that a moral victory, well I'm not in it for moral victories, and neither is my team. It's early but we need to start finding ways to win these close games now,"added Hallenbeck.

Some bright spots for the Lakers on the weekend were Scheuch, who went 5-9 (.556 avg.), Hammond who went 4-9 (.444 avg.) with 4 RBI's, Derek Gaisbauer who went 5-13 (.385 avg.) with 5 RBI's ,and Zach Uhazie who went 4-7 (.571 avg.) with 2 home runs and 4 RBI's.

The Lakers will play on Wednesday, March 14, 2018, at Potomac State College of West Virginia for a double header at 2pm, before making their way back down to Myrtle Beach, SC, March 17 - 21, 2018.
