#6 seed Cecil College blew out #3 seed Garrett College by thirty in last year's Region XX tournament. It was payback this time around. The #6 seed Lakers upset #3 seed Cecil College 78-74 to advance to the semifinals tomorrow evening on the campus of Howard Community College. Garrett built an 18 point lead early in the second half only to see it evaporate as the Seahawks used a full-court press to rush the Lakers into bad shots. Cecil took a four-point lead 67-63 with three minutes to go in the game. The Lakers Kenyon Stone hit a three-pointer with 2:24 to go to cut the Cecil lead to one 67-66. After Cecil's Jacob Falco hit one of two from the line, Freshmen guard Malik Whitaker hit a corner three to give the Lakers back the lead 69-68 with 1:43 to play. After Falco missed a driving layup Whitaker was at it again as he drained another three-pointer at the top of the key to give the Lakers a 72-68 lead with 1:14 to play. However, Cecil cut the lead to one on Justin Cohen's three-point play with under a minute to go. On the ensuing possession for Garrett, Whitaker missed a layup and Cecil rebounded but threw the ball away trying to get the ball up the floor with 22 seconds left. D'Monte Brown was fouled and hit two clutch free throws to extend the Laker lead back to three at 74-71. But Falco took the inbounds pass and dribbled the length of the floor, made a driving layup, got fouled and hit his free throw to tie the game at 74 apiece with 13 seconds left. After a time-out, Cameron Selders found Stone on the left-wing and knocked down a highly contested three-pointer to give the Lakers a 77-74 lead with six seconds left. Falco, after getting double-teamed on the inbounds play got the ball, dribbled off his leg and Selders tipped the ball on the baseline. Before the ball went out of bounds Selders grabbed it, jumped in the air and hit Falco as the ball went out of bounds with three seconds left. Selders was fouled and hit the first free throw to seal the victory for the Lakers. The Lakers will face #2 seed and host Howard Community College who beat #7 seed Montgomery 86-62 in the semifinals tomorrow night at 7:30 PM. The Dragons blew out the Lakers in February 101-63 as the Lakers suffered season lows 28% from the field and 11% from three-point range. In other action, #8 seed Frederick Community College upset the #1 seed Beaver County 79-78 and #4 seed CCBC-Dundalk beat #5 Potomac State 72-64 in overtime.
