Lakers Perfect in McDonald's Tip - Off

McHENRY, Md. – Garrett College's basketball teams swept through the McDonald's Tip-off Tournament last weekend, with the Lakers winning a pair of men's basketball contests and the women claiming a come-from-behind, season-opening victory over Prince George's Community College.

The GC men (3-1) overwhelmed Community College of Allegheny County-Allegheny, 75-54, last Friday as Zakeem Davis scored 17 points to lead six Lakers into double figures.  Davis poured in a game-high 27 points on Saturday to help carry GC past Pennsylvania Highlands Community College, 75-70.

Davis shot 7-for-11 from the field with 6 rebounds and 5 steals in the win over Allegheny.  Kai Thompson (13 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists), Merlon Devine (12 points), Elisha Kidd (10 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists), Strahinja Ivic (10 points), and Kyle Mongroo (10 points) all reached double digits in the Lakers' most balanced offensive attack so far this season.

Marin Lisica (2 points) had a team-high 9 rebounds against CCAC-Allegheny.

Davis shouldered more of the load Saturday against PHCC, going 10-for-14 from the line while hauling down 14 rebounds to go with 5 steals and 3 assists.  Kidd, who shot 7-for-11 from the field, added 18 points, while Ivic finished with 11 points.

Tyshira Joplin made 8-of-12 field-goal attempts on the way to a team-high 20 points as the Laker women defeated a PGCC program that is historically one of the better teams in the Maryland Junior College Athletic Conference.  Tied with PG after each of the first two quarters and trailing by a point heading to the fourth, GC held the Owls to 11 points in the final period to pull away for the win.

G'Vahn Pace was the only other Laker in double figures with 11 points.

Marche Sisco had game highs in points (34) and steals (7) while hauling in 9 rebounds in a losing effort for the Owls.  Sisco, who made 11-of-23 shots from the field but was only 8-of-17 from the free-throw line, was the only PG player to reach double figures.

Both GC teams were in action Tuesday night, hosting the College of Southern Maryland in a doubleheader.  Garrett's women host Penn State Fayette Friday at 1 p.m. and play Mercyhurst North East Saturday at noon in the David K. Martin Classic.

The GC men host Salem University Friday at 7 p.m. and Mercyhurst North East Saturday at 2 p.m. in David K. Martin Classic contests.
