Ward’s hat trick helps GC top Frederick

McHenry, MD – Sophomore Jorjalynn Ward's hat trick and Kayla Moore's second shutout of the season sparked the Lady Lakers in last Tuesday night's 3-0 women's soccer win over visiting Frederick Community College.

"Jorjalynn said this was her first hat trick in her entire soccer career because she's always been a defender," said GC head coach Zach Ward, who was able to make Jorjalynn Ward a focal point of the offense thanks to the emergence of two freshmen.

"Livy Grieco and Kylee Kiddy have made a really good impact right away on the center of the defense," said Coach Ward. "That's allowed us to move Jorjalynn to midfield and find the goals that we needed."

Jorjalynn Ward, who now has a team-leading four goals, tallied off a Jacquelyn Jeffreys assist just five minutes into the second half for the game's first goal. She scored on a penalty kick with 27 minutes remaining and finished off the hat trick by scoring unassisted with 12 minutes remaining.

Moore stopped all six Frederick shots on goal to claim the shutout. GC finished with a 20-9 advantage in shots and an 11-6 edge in shots on goal.

Coach Ward is pleased with the progress his team has made so far this season.

"We knew coming in not having huge numbers could play a role in how our season progressed, but our 14 athletes have all accepted the roles that they're playing," he observed.

Hagerstown 7, Garrett 0

Hagerstown, MD – Peyton Miller and Amelia Beck-Schmeider each scored twice last Thursday as the unbeaten Hawks (6-0-1 overall, 5-0-1 league) blanked Garrett College.

Maci Rhinaman and Angie Ayala-Luna each added a goal and two assists, and Makayla Wright scored a goal for the Hawks.

Hagerstown goalkeeper Kiran Hole stopped the only two shots on goal she faced.

GC netminder Kayla Moore finished with 19 saves and shut out the Hawks over the last 26:34 as the Lady Lakers avoided an early end to the contest due to the eight-goal mercy rule.

"It wasn't perfect, but there were moments," said GC head coach Zach Ward. "We came to play 90 minutes; we played 90 minutes, and we competed for 90 minutes.

"Kayla kept us in the game with her play in goal and Amarriah Brown brought huge energy, which certainly helped us in the second half," added Ward.

Hagerstown finished with a 48-2 shots advantage.

GC fell to 2-3, 2-2.
