Lady Lakers sweep Pennsylvania Highlands

McHenry, MDChloe Heeter notched a match-high 26 assists as the Lady Lakers swept Pennsylvania Highlands Community College last Wednesday night to reach double-digit wins for the second consecutive year.

Garrett College improved to 10-6 with its 25-20, 25-22, and 25-21 win over the Black Bears (2-8). The Lady Lakers have won three of their last four matches and six of their last nine, but head coach Brittany Jackson said her team's latest victory didn't feature them at their best.

"We made a lot of mental mistakes and errors that we don't typically make," said Jackson, whose squad finished with 28 kills and 27 hitting errors. "We pulled out  the win, but it wasn't our cleanest win."

GC's Emma McCord (four aces) and Mia Barios (three aces) each had six kills while Cierra Shoop (match-high six aces) contributed five and Brenna L'Hommedieu (four aces) added four kills.

The Lady Lakers,  with an 8-6 regional record, close the regular season Wednesday night with a 6 p.m. home match against Potomac State College of West Virginia University (11-5 overall, 9-4 region). That match will play a key role in determining seeding for the NJCAA Division II Region 20 tournament.

Montgomery College (20-4, 14-0), Hagerstown Community College (15-5, 13-2), and the College of Southern Maryland (15-11, 13-2) have separated themselves from the regional pack. The next seven teams – including Garrett and Potomac State – entered the final week of the regular season each with between eight and nine region wins.

"That's the exciting thing about this conference," Jackson said of the balance within Region 20. "This week will definitely determine who finishes where. The tables could turn any which way. It's very interesting to see."
